New Method of Measuring Mechanical Losses by Motoring of Internal Combustion Engine
Original language description
Internal combustion engine motoring is one of the basic experimental methods of estimating its friction losses. The in-cylinder pressure is less than half the amount of pressure during real engine operation in the current method in the motored engine. Lower in-cylinder pressure reduces the force load on the piston group and the crank mechanism. Mechanical losses detected in the motored engine are thus significantly reduced compared to reality. A new method of measuring mechanical losses is being researched in the Laboratory of the Department of vehicles and engines at FME TU in Liberec. The research engine is motored with a deactivated valvetrain and is externally supplied with air to achieve in-cylinder pressure comparable with in-cylinder pressure during standard engine operation. This paper explains the necessary adjustment of the engine for this method, shows the results of mechanical losses of the piston engine measured using this new method and compares the results with the current method.
