Multifunction valve for FMEP measurement
Original language description
A multifunction valve body for the measurement of mechanical losses by motoring an ICE with increased time-averaged pressure in-cylinder and with a deactivated valvetrain (permanently closed valves) was designed and manufactured. This valve consists of a special automatic one-way valve for the supply of compressed air, a decompression screw, and a pressure sensor adaptor. Motoring tests took place on a current naturally aspirated EA211 EVO engine from ŠKODA AUTO at pressures close to real operation.

Technical parameters
A multifunction valve for measurement of mechanical losses by motoring an ICE (internal combustion engine) with increased pressure in-cylinder and with a deactivated valvetrain (permanently closed valves) was designed and manufactured. This valve consists of a special self-action one-way valve (mounted in the cylinder head instead of a spark plug) for the supply of compressed air, a decompression screw (for trouble-free starting/stopping of the engine), and a high-pressure piezoelectric sensor adaptor (measurement pressure in-cylinder). The optimization of the valve body design ensured the necessary dynamic and flow properties as well as the functional reliability of the one-way valve. The full functionality of the multifunction valve has been tested experimentally and verified computationally. Experiments were carried out on the engine testbed, designed for ICE motoring, on a current naturally aspirated EA211 engine (1.6l MPI and 1.5l MPI EVO) from ŠKODA AUTO at pressures close to real operation and on the special measuring testbed designed only for multifunction valve testing. The maximum cylinder pressures during ICE motoring with multifunction valves were even higher (stable pressures of up to 110 bar) than in real engine operation with combustion. Computational verification was focused on investigating the engine working cycle and the flow of compressed air from the pressure reservoir through the self-action one-way valve into the engine cylinder..
Economical parameters
Compared to the standard ICE mechanical loss measurement by motoring, the new measurement method is more energy efficient. The engine motoring with permanently closed valves and a multi-function screw with a one-way valve for the supply of compressed air to control the working pressure in the engine cylinders significantly accelerates and refines research on ICE and piston ring manufacturers.
