THE KNOCKING PHENOMENON ON COMPRESSION-IGNITION ENGINES WHEN OPERATING CNG/DIESEL AND CNG/HVO DUAL-FUEL
Original language description
With the high thermal efficiency and low greenhouse gas emissions of diesel engines, it is being appreciated by users in the crisis of energy shortage and environmental pollution. On the other hand, diesel engines are increasingly important in modern transportation. Therefore, researchers seek new energy sources to entirely or partially replace diesel fuel in compression-ignition (CI) engines. In that context, methane fuels (CNG) and hydrogen-treated vegetable oils (HVO) are important research subjects and have always interested researchers. These fuels are used in dual-fuel (CNG/diesel and CNG/HVO) operating modes in CI engines. The article focuses on researching and evaluating the effect of knocking in CNG/diesel and CNG/HVO dual-fuel operating modes. Knocking occurs because part of CNG fuel is compressed at high temperatures and pressure. All experiments were performed on a four-stroke Cummins diesel engine with AC STAG electronic control unit operating in dual-fuel mode. The system is installed with Ac dyno-measuring devices and other pressure, temperature, and emission-measuring devices. By the Knock Peak method used in the AVL Indicom software, high-pressure analysis during fuel combustion showed knocking in the cylinders. The maximum pressure deviation is known as the knock peak value (KNK_PK). Knocking can be observed in both dual-fuel modes with different pressure curves, which are higher than in diesel. The CoV coefficient of dual-fuel operation is higher than that of CI engine diesel fuel operation. The knock limit of both CNG/diesel and CNG/HVO dual-fuels has been shown in this study.
