Milling carbon composite materials with epoxy resin matrix, effect of tool geometry and cutting conditions on tool wear and delamination.

  • Original language description

Composite materials with carbon fibers in an epoxy matrix are widely used systems due to their excellent mechanical parameters, and machining is a standard finishing operation in their manufacture. Inappropriate choice of tools and cutting conditions leads to delamination between the deposited layers, thermal damage to the materials in the reactoplastic matrix and a reduction in the quality of the cutting edge of the tool. This study focuses on circumferential milling of composite materials, the effect of tool geometry, cutting angle and cutting conditions on delamination, tool wear, cutting forces and surface roughness of the machined part. Tool coatings (diamond), which are often a necessity for machining carbon composites due to the high abrasion of hard carbon fibers, also affect wear. The study also deals with the formation of chips during machining of these materials, carbon chips are divided into microsized parts which are harmful to health and harmful to machines as well. Milling tools of different geometries, number of teeth and coatings were selected for the research and the effects of each parameter on the accompanying and subsequent phenomena during milling were investigated. The results of the study will help to increase the knowledge of machining of CFRP materials.
