Functionalisation of Nylon-based Filtration Materials using Thin Films Deposited by Environmentally Sustainable Magnetron Sputtering

  • Original language description

There is a long-term considerable interest in materials that effectively deactivate various bacteria and provide an alternative to chemicals. Our research explores integrating antibacterial and hydrophobic properties on temperature and chemically sensitive materials, aimed at applications in biotechnology and medicine. We produce thin-film coatings using PVD magnetron DC pulse sputtering deposition on a polyamide 6.6 filter. This process prioritises environmental sustainability by operating at low temperatures in a vacuum, generating minimal waste, and avoiding toxic chemicals. Our findings show that magnetron sputtering effectively produces thin coatings that exhibit potent antibacterial activity without impacting filtration efficiency. Its ability to deposit at low temperatures makes it a valuable tool for sustainable and enhanced surface design across various materials, including glass, metals, ceramics, polymers, textiles, and paper.
