Field comparison of selected nZVI: Case study of Pisecna site
Original language description
Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been used for treatment of many chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) at many sites. Till now, mainly the TODA particles were used for pilot and field applications. In this study, five different samples of nZVI were compared in a laboratory from the point of view of reactivity and mobility. NZVI reactivity was studied on two samples of contaminated groundwater (containing chlorinated ethenes and ethanes) and two artificially mixed samples. All new samples show better reactivity compared to TODA nZVI. The TODA nZVI and the Tween-60 new surface modified nZVI were additionally compared in the field pilot application at the Pisecna site (Czech Republic). Two comparable spots of the contaminated site were studied after injection of 150 kg of appropriate nZVI samples. While both nZVI samples are able to sufficiently dechlorinate the chlorinated ethenes (ClE), the chlorinated ethanes (ClA) were better treated by Tween-60 modified nZVI.
