Analysis and some improvements of FMECA
Original language description
FMECA is directly based on semiquantitative approach for risk evaluation. The risk is abstractedly expressed by Risk Priority Number (RPN), which is without unit and the main target is to order analyzed failure modes. In some paper there are mentions about FMECA weak points. The most important are about RPN evaluation. The product of severity, occurrence and detection is suitable for full quantitative risk evaluation, but it?s not possible to apply it automatically to semiquantitative approach. This paper analytically shows that the product using is really not suitable for RPN in general and that the evaluation should be directly related to scales structure. It?s interesting the sum of values is better than the product for scales used in VDA standard (Germany?s Automotive Standards). It?s not so simple for scales in IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard, but the solution is shown.
