K-out-of-N systems: Design, operation and preventive maintenance
Original language description
The K-out-of-N system consists of N items and it is in functional state if at least K items fulfill the function. These systems are applicable for static (eg. cooler), rotation (eg. pumps) and electronic (eg. temperature measurement) equipment. The paper will introduce the possibilities of such systems operation, for example cold/hot backup, and will assign the variants to calculate dependability parameters. Based on this knowledge it is possible to choose the optimal values of K and N numbers for the required reliability or availability parameters of the system.rnThe target is to create an overview for the designer/user/operator of these systems. It can help them in determining the functional structure of systems, the method of operation and maintenance to ensure safety requirements or optimize the overall system cost. Some approaches in preventive maintenance are shown in example (cooling system). The maintenance program is tested by Monte Carlo simulation in Matlab software
