Determinants of Resilience Capacity of the Czech Regions

High volatility at financial markets, thus, lower predictability of the world economy development with more frequent occurrence of various shocks contributed to a fast dissemination of the concept of ‘resilience’. Resilience consists in capacity of a region to withstand and recover from a shock without being seriously hit and/or derailed from its growth path. Especially lower territorial units may be very vulnerable to economic shocks; hence they strive to identify factors underpinning their long-run socio-economic development. To do so, a profound analysis of their capacity to resist and bounce back after a shock occurs is required. The paper explores major determinants of resilience capacity of the Czech regions at NUTS 3 level with regard to the latest global financial and economic crisis 2008 – 09. It begins with a brief introduction to the concept of resilience. Subsequently, sensitivity of the NUTS 3 regions is explored to the respective external demand shock using a set of general macroeconomic indicators. To round the paper off, main determinants of regional capacity to withstand the shock is explored using the point method.
