A new method for measuring of rupture properties of fabrics

  • Original language description

Tensile properties of woven and knitted fabric are enormously anisotropic. Standard test methods for measuring of breaking stress and strain, such as ISO standard 13934-1 (Strip test) and 13934-2 (Grab test), are restricted for the testing of fabrics with great lateral contraction. Great lateral contraction leads to premature rupture of samples at the jaws due to stress concentration at the corners of the gripped specimen before reaching the real strength of the sample. Usually, extreme lateral contraction is anticipated for striped woven fabric under off-axis stress and for knitted fabric. It is experimentally demonstrated that the presented method in this investigation corresponds better with precise measurement of fabric rupture properties in comparison with standard test methods. The method is verified by measuring mechanical properties of a wide variety of woven and knitted fabrics. Typical tensile properties of measured fabrics are presented and analyzed in this paper.
