Radial compressive properties of tubular weft knitted and braided Nitinol textiles

  • Original language description

Nitinol is a particular shape memory alloy (SMA) belonging to the group of so called smart materials as it exhibits functional properties such as superelasticity and thermally induced shape memory effect. Tubular weft knitted and braided textiles made ofnitinol wires are nowadays commonly applied as medical implants. In this work, we report on experimental study dealing with radial compressive properties of tubular weft knitted and braided nitinol textiles. Radial compressive properties are here assumed as an estimate of radial stiffness, which is an important parameter of medical implants. Firstly, technology of manufacture of these textiles is explained. Secondly, experimental method for radial stiffness estimation is described. Thirdly, experimentscarried out with the aim to identify the influence of temperature and nitinol composition on radial stiffness are reported. Finally, experimental results are discussed and rationalized with reference to deformation processes occurring in
