Creation of new ?green space? is the very essence and lifeblood of growth, prosperity and wealth of an organization. From its once lofty perch in the global economy textiles industry today stands in stark contrast to the once enviable preeminent positionof just a decade ago. The industry is in a state of decline in the West and Japan. Its influence on the society as a whole has eroded enormously. Green space refers to the virgin segments of the market where little or no competition exists. Hence, subsequent development of new products, processes and technology should yield a strong foothold with an unassailable competitive advantage. The present article seeks to explore the core competency of textile and fiber scientists, areas of improvement and casestudies of recent successes with a view to suggest remedies for the future.
