Study on Ozone Treatment of Aramid Fabrics

Aramid fibers have been applied into protective products which mostly are ballistic proof and fireman clothes due to its high strength, good energy dissipation, light weight, heat resistance, cut resistance, and comfortable. In order to modify the surface property and then improve the friction between fibers and yarns, ozone treatment was carried out. The aramid fabrics were evaluated in terms of surface morphology, wicking effect, tensile property of aramid fibers, and ball bursting test. The results showed that the surface morphology of aramid fabrics did not have obvious change; the wicking effect increased slightly with the increase of ozone treatment time, but the original aramid fabrics (without ozone treatment) had the best wicking effect; the breaking strength of weft yarns in aramid fabrics improved after the ozone treatment; the ball bursting load and penetration displacement also had a slightly increase after ozone treatment.
