    INTERPHASE PROPERTIES IN PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBER BY NANOINDENTATION

    The mechanical deformation is significant for plastic optical fibers applied as wefts or warps in weaving. Appropriate deformation for end emitting optical fibers can enhance side emission effect, but excessive deformation can only result in the great attenuation. Both the core and cladding in plastic optical fiber are contributed to the mechanical properties. The interphase properties can not only affect the light propagation in optical fiber, but also play an important role in mechanical properties ofoptical fiber. The hardness and elastic modulus of plastic optical fiber with 0.5 mm diameter were measured by Hysitron nanoindenter. Nanoindentation with various indentation depths and spacings was investigated in the interphase region between core andcladding. A line with about 10 nanoindents in the diameter direction was conducted from claddiing to core. There was a gradient in both hardness and elastic modulus in interphase region.
