OZONATION: A GREEN SOURCE FOR OXIDIZED COTTON

  • Original language description

Research is being carried out for the oxidation of cellulose by Ozone treatment. It is considered as environment friendly in comparison with the existing oxidation methods used in industry for long time. This treatment is used in different applications such as scouring / bleaching of cotton fabrics and in improving the properties of Kraft pulp cellulose in paper industry. In this study, the effect of Ozone treatment on cotton yarn properties is investigated. This investigation can help in obtaining themaximum crystalline percentage of cotton for the production of Nano crystalline cellulose. Two-ply cotton ring spun yarn is treated with Ozone gas at different time periods. Yarn tensile properties, wickability, Copper number and physical appearance areobserved. It is evident that yarn tensile properties deteriorate drastically after certain time while wickability and Copper number increase simultaneously.
