Fly Ash Nanoparticles between Layers of Glass Fabric/ Epoxy Laminated Composites
Original language description
The work is focused on understanding the role of filling the mechanically activated wet milled fly ash into three vertically stacked layers of glass fabrics on improvements of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of epoxy composites. The high energy wet milling process was employed for mechanical activation and resulted in successful size reduction of fly ash particles below 500 nm after 5 hours of milling. The damping properties of composites filled with mechanically activated fly ash were found higher than that of the neat epoxy composites and composites filled with unmilled fly ash, due to percentage increase in hollow structure of wet milled fly ash which is responsible for frictional damping. The mechanical testing of knife penetration resistance revealed that the nanocomposites perform better in terms of energy absorption compared to neat layered composite. All nano-composites show improved knife penetration resistance, improved breaking strength and energy. The uniform
