Original language description
Mechanical tensile failure of naked plastic optical fiber (POF) cannot be ignored for its applications as wefts or warps in soft light fabrics. Tensile strength distribution is related to the pre-existing flaws both in fiber volume and on fiber surface,the components of core and cladding, and the interface properties between core and cladding. Mechanical properties of POF based on PMMA were investigated by Instron-4411 tester with different fiber length. The experimental values of original modulus, deformation and ultimate tensile strength of POF were calculated and analyzed. The results indicate that both two parameter Weibull distribution and three parameter Weibull distribution could be utilized for the evaluation of tensile failure and the elastic-plastic behavior of POF. The dependence of tensile strength on fiber length of POF could be estimated by the model of three parameter Weibull distribution.
