Development And Characterization of 3d Orthogonal Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composite

  • Original language description

Conventional 2D composites are inefficient to handle out-of-plane tension and load due to the poor inter-laminar joint. Three-dimensional preform enables yarns to be inserted in z direction, which greatly improves properties of the composite in through-the-thickness direction. In this research, 3D orthogonal carbon fibre reinforced composite was developed and its properties were compared with those of conventional plain woven fabric reinforced composite. To solve the problem of yarn damage caused by friction during the weaving process, a laboratory-scale weaving device was build up. Compression and vacuum assisted resin infusion moulding (VARIM) techniques were used for composite fabrication. The two techniques were put into comparison and it has beenfound that fabric geometry could be well retained using the later one. Bending tests were performed to evaluate the properties of 2D and 3D composite. The results show that 3D composite exhibits superior properties in the warp and weft di
