New Approach for the Prediction of Compression Pressure Using Cut-Strip Method

  • Original language description

Compression socks are a highly acclaimed textile garment for pressure exertion on the lower part of the leg. It is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of venous disorders in the human lower extremities. The main aim of current research was to modify the Laplace’s law and introduction of some new but missing parameters that have not been incorporated previously for the prediction of compression pressure. By incorporating the new parameters including deformed width (wf), true stress (σ_T), logarithmic strain(ε_T), true modulus (E_T) along with engineering stress σ_E/_E)/modulus (E_E) concept into Hook’s Law, circumferential and rectangular shaped physical and technical specifications was the main objective of the current research. On the basis of above we developed two mathematical models for the prediction of compression pressure and compared the same with recently developed mathematical models for the prediction of compression pressure exerted by compression stockings. The expected novelty of such a model is its applicability and validation not only for socks but all kind of compression garments of any geometrical structure. Those compression garments are usually recommended for the compression therapy for all parts of body structure considering the circular parts only. All the socks samples were hand washed using standardized techniques comprised of hand washing and drying standards, marking and cutting of cut strips at minimum girth area around the circular wooden leg. For pressure measurement at ankle portion, Salzmann MST MKIV pressure measuring device was used while for tensile testing, Testometric tensile testing device was used. Derivation of new mathematical model was introduced and compared the theoretical and experimental pressure values. All the data was statistically analyzed using simple linear regression analysis by Minitab 17 software.
