Scheherezade across the Ocean: Mapping the Arab American Fiction
Original language description
This paper aims to analyze the identity strategies of Arab Americans fiction authors as well as their literary corollary. The stories of these writers, some of them with an already established literary reputation, others less known, embrace an amazing variety of situations. Some of their characters long for their Lebanese, Palestinian, Egyptian, Syrian, or Libyan homeland, others refuse to speak Arabic. In spite of the diversity of identity patterns they display, these stories are neither acts of eulogy, nor acts of betrayal. The Arab American writers sustain the integrity of their communities with their stories, they let the outside world into their world, and they make serious efforts to tell their stories well and in truth.
