Political Geography of Quality of Life. Outline of Concept.

  • Original language description

Quality of life is an expression describing life satisfaction at an individual or societal level. While wellbeing and its respective life satisfaction are central concepts to the quality of life, and are associated with the term "the good life", geographers use the term "good place" for a place where life is good. Conceptualization of the political geography of the quality of life is based on linking the key terms good life and good place with the term "good company", which includes good governance. The dimension of quality of place contains a domain of policy with many indicators. The existence of a political domain for quality of life which is strongly linked to the space demonstrates the fact that quality of life has its own political geography. This is mainly manifested at a societal level. Some of the most important measurements of quality of life are listed at a nationwide level; with special attention devoted to the analysis of EU member states and some other countries. Measurement shows that countries with the highest and lowest quality of life values are attained by both member and non-member EU countries. Bulgaria and Romania achieved very different results, despite being at similar levels of social and economic development. The most important finding is that quality of life does not apply to the distribution of the EU 15 and new member states (east-west gradient), but north-south gradient.
