Liberec: The City of Many Churches, but Without Worshipers?
Original language description
The paper is focused on religious-geographical research of the city of Liberec, the fifth most populous city in the Czech Republic. Liberec (Reichenberg before 1945) is located in the northern part of the state near the borders with Germany and Poland in the region, which was strongly affected by the expulsion of the German population after the Second World War. This forced emigration and immigration of Czech and Slovak people led to the interruption of tradition and also religious belief which was sharpened during the decades of communist regime. However, there are still many sacred sites of various religions in Liberec. The city experiences an increase of religious heterogeneity after the fall of communism in the state, although there is a general trend of secularization in whole Czech society. The study attempts to summarize actual and historical information about religious life in Liberec spaces, brings some stats and contains table and map additions.
