Marafioti chose the memoir in order to present the stages of her individuation as a woman and her transition from the Soviet Union to the United States. The Roma diarist talks about growing up Gypsy and becoming American. This book continues the American tradition of the self-made woman because Oksana Marafioti become what she is in spite of her family but also aware of the cultural traditions she carries with her through her heritage.
