Is the Secularization Thesis a Helpful Tool for Understanding the Modern Religious History of CEE? A Case of the Czech Republic
Original language description
Despite its popularity, the secularization thesis has become a target of much criticism in the past twenty years. There is no doubt that contemporary Euro-American society is based on the reasonable separation of Church and state, due to which people live relatively separated from the direct “interference” on the part of religion and can choose from an extensive range of religions without being limited or prosecuted. There were four most frequent objections. The first is that the secularization theory is internally weak in its logical structure. The second reprimand is supported by data obtained from surveys carried out in recent times, which challenge the secularization theory on the gradual extinction of religions. The third reason for dismissing the secularization thesis is an empirically provable statement maintaining that contemporary society is stricken with a wave of alternative religiosity related to the phenomenon of the so-called new religious movements and, more so, to new forms of established churches. And finally, the fourth reason to rebuke is that religion remains an influential political and economic power worldwide. This last objection to the secularization theory is the most fundamental and productive. The chapter is focused on analysing the application of the so-called secularization thesis for Central and Eastern European countries, and it tries to show that this part of Europe underwent various types or forms of secularization.
