This chapter intends to reinterpret the literary critical consensus on the representation of terrorist acts committed by the early Zionist Jewish immigrants of the 1930s in Arthur Koestler‘s Thieves in the Night (1946). Based on our close reading of the novel and 21st-century theoretical discussions on terrorism, and especially observations in John Horgan‘s The Psychology of Terrorism (2005), an alternative explanation to violence committed by immigrants is offered. This interpretation emphasizes that terrorism is rarely triggered by a single traumatic event. On the contrary, it is usually caused by progressive „communal identification” (88) with (other) victims of oppression and should be interpreted as a „form of communication” (2) between minorities and other members of the society. Furthermore, with the novel focusing especially on the moral, social and psychological development of Joseph, its protagonist-focalizer, who embraces terrorism on his journey of becoming a fully integrated member of Palestinian society, the controversial nature of terrorism notwithstanding, it is also argued that Koestler‘s novel can be categorized as a Bildungsroman.
