Building cross-border cooperation through rural heritage: lessons from the Umgebinde House Route
Original language description
This practice paper explores the institutional challenges and emerging good practices of the Umgebinde House Route, a cross-border initiative linking rural communities in the Czech - German - Polish borderland through the preservation of traditional Umgebinde houses. Drawing on desk research and forty stakeholder interviews, the paper identifies language barriers, limited institutional capacity, and mental distance as major obstacles to cooperation. It highlights the coordinating role of Saxon institutions and nearby urban centres in building lasting partnerships. The initiative demonstrates how shared architectural heritage can strengthen cross-border identity and rural tourism development.
