    The composition of the industrial wastewaters is usually very different from one plant to another. Industrial wastewaters also contain often hardly biodegradable organic matter or inhibiting compounds. The membrane separation coupled with activated sludge processes (membrane bioreactor - MBR) represents a promising option for treatment of difficult industrial wastewaters, especially if nitrification should be achieved. The influence of industrial wastewater on the performance of a MBR was assessed in detail. The key process was nitrification which was evaluated based on the influent and effluent parameters as well as kinetic batch laboratory test. The MBR (120 l volume, hollow fibres) was fed by a mixture of municipal and industrial wastewaters comingfrom chemical and pharmaceutical production.
