Reduction of the Discrete Fracture Network and its Effect on the Solution of the Flow Problem

Result description

The paper deals with solution of the flow problem on the 2D discrete fracture network, in context of coupled stress-flow-transport problem. It describes and evaluates two algorithms for the simplification of fracture network geometry to reduce the problem size and to avoid possible ill-conditioning of the problem. The reduction is controlled by a length parameter expressing a scale of the geometry simplification. The effect on the flow problem solution change and its dependence on the mechanical stressfield is evaluated depending on the reduction parameters and in the context of problem size decrease. For both methods, a certain level of reduction can be found, with sufficiently small effect of solution and reasonable save of computation.
