The submitted work presents the results of laboratory tests focusing on a comparison of the reactive and migration properties of a new type of non-pyrophoric iron powder called NANOFER STAR (manufacturer NANO IRON s.r.o.) before and after activation. Theprocess of activation causes the disintegration of inorganic surface shell, which protects the iron nanoparticles before oxidation on contact with air. The activation process involves leaving a prepared stock slurry in a concentrated state (usually 20%wt.) for 48 hours. The pilot and field tests confirmed that the activation was not successful after dilution to application concentrations. The results of batch tests and column tests of non-activated and activated suspensions of NF STAR were compared with activated suspensions of NF STAR with additional surface modifications using various organic stabilizers.
