    New Possibilities for the Laboratory Study of the Migration of Zero-Valent Nanoiron

    Iron nanoparticles have long been applied for the in-situ remediation of contaminants that can be chemically reduced to less toxic forms. Given the nature of the contaminants and the conditions at the site, nanoiron preparations are increasingly applied with various different surface modifications. For the effective use of nanoiron it is necessary to know the migratory ability of the remediated soil (rock). For a detailed study of the migratory abilities of different types of nanoiron a unique device was developed at TUL enabling on-line monitoring of the migration of Fe nanoparticles during column tests. The device uses the ferromagnetic properties of iron and is based on the accurate measurement of very small changes in the magnetic susceptibility of the column packing. The changes in susceptibility cause changes in the frequency of the applied high frequency field. At an operating frequency of 10 kHz the device is able to measure changes at the level of 1MHz.
