Mechanically Enhanced Electrospun Polyamide-6 Nanofiber Composite Membranes for Liquid Filtration
Original language description
Electrospun nanofibers have several promising application area due to their high specific surface area, narrow pore size, high porosity and uniform pore size. These unique features are vital for filtration applications especially in water and wastewater separation. Nanofibrous membranes have not found any real applications due to their poor mechanical strength under high pressure. Herein, polyamide 6 (PA6) nanofiber layers were prepared using needle-free semi-industrial production method. The mechanical properties of nanofiber webs were improved using lamination technology on various supporting layers. The nanofiber composite membranes were characterized with Scanning Electron Microscope images, porosity, layer thickness, pore size, and contact angle measurements. Tensile tests of the nanofibers and nanofiber composite membranes were performed using a universal tensile testing machine. A filtration test was carried out using real wastewater supplied from a company which consists of pitch and tar oils. The organic compound in the wastewater was measured using the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) direct measurement method. The tensile strength of the nanofiber layers was increased from 3 to 20 times by the lamination method. The supporting material used for laminating process showed a huge effect on the permeability of the membranes. Supporting layer with the lowest packing density showed the best permeability (e.g. 400 L/m2hbar) after 14 hours operation. The nanofiber composite membranes exhibited high water fluxes in even low pressures with high TOC rejection which indicates that electrospun nanofiber membranes might be highly promising for microfiltration applications.
