The intersections of creativity and complex moral emotions

  • Original language description

This chapter will explore the intersections of creativity and the experience of moral emotions. Moral emotions, related to the moral judgments and decisions, may shape one's creative thoughts and actions, but may also be consequences of one's creative behavior. The available empirical evidence shows several intersections of creativity and moral emotions. Sympathy and authentic pride have been found to be related to creative originality and greater creative performance. In contrast, creative activity may cause an increase of the subsequent experience of guilt. This chapter outlines the research in this field and provides avenues for future research. The issues such as the social evaluation–creativity relationship, the effects of narrowly focused versus broadly focused moral emotions on creative performance, or possible disturbance of perception of social conformity by the creative action of an individual represent several directions for future research of creativity and moral emotions.
