The 13th–14th century glass in northwest Bohemia: typology, archaeometry and provenance.
Original language description
Since the 80s is glass of 13th - 14th century from the northwest Bohemia subject of research. At first, it was examined from the typological-chronological point of view, from the end of 90s also of chemical composition. At present, we know 29 sites; of these are 15 settlements and 14 glassworks. Archaeological excavations have produced a large and diverse database. The largest part of this database consists of glass from medieval town Most, where the more extensive field researches, than on all other locations, were realized. Remaining files were obtained in smaller excavations in other towns of North Bohemia, but also in pre-locational settlements, and strongholds, castles, rarely in sacral localities (monasteries and churches). Shape scale of vessels is wide. This scale includes more variants beakers, bottles, bottles with inner ring and kutrolfs. These shapes are decorated mostly with plastic decor, rarely optical or painted decor. Archaeometric research allowed us to distinguish the glass of five chemical types: soda-lime, plant-ash glass (A2), high-lead glass (B), lead-ash glass (D), mixed alkali glass (E), wood-ash glass (F). On the basis of archeometrical survey can be determine the provenance of findings, which indicates international trade and cultural contacts of northwest Bohemia. Vessels made from glass of first 4 chemical types can be safely classified as imports from the south, south-east and south-west Europe, or even the Middle East. It is difficult to seek the origin of glass vessels from the fifth group. Some of these vessels may be produced in Bohemian glassworks. Others could be made in those foreign workshops where the glass was melted by using the recipe of potassium alkali as the flux. Recognizing the origin of vessels from wood-ash glass will be possible only after future detailed archeometric research.
