Contribution of new research of Bylany culture cemeteries (Ha C1 – Ha D1) in the lower Eger river area.

  • Original language description

The paper is devoted to burial sites of Bylany culture of the Early Iron Age (Ha C1 – Ha D1) in the region of the lower Eger (North-western Bohemia, Ústí nad Labem region, dist. Litoměřice). Opening texts are devoted to outlining the pre-war grave researches, which overwhelmingly lack any finding circumstances, and have a low information value. For these reasons the resource base of funeral remains of the Hallstatt period is critically assessed as unsatisfactory. The aim of the paper is to report on recent research, for which we have a comprehensive collection of findings contexts. The main attention is focused on the parts of the Bylany culture necropolis that were explored at localities Lovosice and Račiněves in the years 1998 – 2006. Large-scale excavations bring to region the first evidence on the overall size and structure of funeral sites. Wide range of information was obtained by studying the Bylany culture burial rite that manifests in birituality, different quantity of buried individuals a wide variability in the furnishing or different parameters, forms and modifications of graves. Besides the substantial improvement in resource base, the benefit of research lies in typological-chronological analysis of artefacts that are represented, among others, by four-wheeled wagon parts, parts of horse harnesses, weapons, tools, adornments and pottery. Based on this the lower Eger area shows potential for a significant Central European centre controlled by elite class, which could play an important supra-regional economic and social role in Hallstatt period.
