Friction properties of HVOF sprayed hardmetal coatings

  • Original language description

The application of the thermally sprayed coatings is one of the possible alternatives to decrease the power loss in engine, caused by friction between piston, piston rings and cylinder. From a wide range of materials, that could be sprayed by HVOF, the most suitable for decreasing friction and wear are coatings, based on the principle of hardmetals. While the hard particles in the hardmetal coatings ensures their wear resistance, the properties of matrix is usually responsible for the friction properties. Such a combination enables to find the optimum between wear resistance and coefficient of friction by alternation of both components. In the paper, the friction properties of different hardmetal coatings is evaluated by pin-on-disc test according to ASTM G-99 under dry and lubricated conditions. Based on the results, their suitability for application on the engines parts is discussed.
