Czech Republic’s Energy Transition in the CEE Context: Decarbonization Strategies and Talent Development

  • Original language description

The invited lecture at ASME Turbo EXPO 2024 presents the current challenges and opportunities in the field of energy decarbonisation in the Czech Republic in the context of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the activities of the ASME IGTI-4-CEE initiative. It highlights the high carbon intensity of Czech electricity generation, which in 2022 was approximately 450 g CO1/kWh, with coal-fired power plants remaining the key source of emissions. However, the Czech Republic plans to invest heavily in modernising its energy infrastructure, including the construction of a new nuclear reactor at Dukovany, the development of renewable energy sources, and the promotion of flexible sources such as gas and pumped storage.Long-term targets include a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (compared to 1990), a complete phase-out of coal by 2033 and the introduction of small modular reactors (SMRs). At the same time, there is strong support for research, training and cooperation between universities, research institutions and industry - particularly in the areas of hydrogen technology, smart grids and energy storage. The IGTI-4-CEE aims to foster new talent in the energy sector, develop international cooperation and accelerate the transition towards a climate-neutral energy sector in Central and Eastern Europe.
