Material characteristics after electrochemical hydrogen saturation of samples using advanced methods
Original language description
In proceedings of 20th conference Service life of energy equipment components. The use of hydrogen or hydrogen/natural gas mixtures instead of pure natural gas represents a key approach to industrial decarbonization. These mixtures are expected to be transported through existing gas pipelines composed of various steel components with different microstructures. This study evaluated the resistance of two steels-X52 (formed pipeline steel) and 1.0619+N (cast valve body steel)-to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Both materials were subjected to electrolytic hydrogen charging in sulfuric acid with CH4N1S as a hydrogen recombination poison, followed by notch impact testing and hydrogen content analysis. For 1.0619+N steel, impact energy decreased from 65 J to 50 J after 24 hours, while hydrogen content increased to 12.81 ppm. Additionally, the X52 steel was tested using a hydrogen permeation test in an H-cell, focusing on the influence of surface roughness and electrolyte composition. It was found that a rougher surface increased the permeation time required for hydrogen to pass through a 1 mm thick specimen. An EBSD analysis of X52 steel before and after hydrogen charging was also performed to determine whether microstructural changes could be correlated with hydrogen-induced embrittlement.
