Nicknames in Chat: Gender Silent or Salient?
Original language description
The present study attempts to find out how many chat users choose a nickname identifiable with respect to gender. The corpus of 1,000 nicknames gathered on a small chat website JustChat.co.uk is classified into three groups: female, male and gender-neutral. Gender-salient nicknames are further categorised with respect to the way they announce the participant's gender affiliation.
