Between Revival and Uncertainty. Monastic and Secular Female Communities in Central Europe in the Long Eighteenth Century/Zwischen Aufbruch und Ungewissheit. Klösterliche und weltliche Frauengemeinschaften in Zentraleuropa im ?langen? 18. Jahrhundert
Original language description
The focus of the collective monograph is on female regular and secular communities (i.e. convents and secular chapters) in Central Europe in the course of the long eighteenth century - the period which has been seen by previous scholarship as a time of decline of religious institutions. However, the eighteenth century brought many profound changes into female religious life and can be characterised by both revival and uncertainty experienced by most religious communities. The collective monograph bringstogether researchers from five countries who have shared conceptual approaches such as an emphasis on the cooperative piety among monastic and secular women and on the fluidity of the line between regular and extraregular life.
