The article examines the female struggle for self-fulfilment in selected texts of a Canadian writer Alice Munro (b. 1931), namely in short stories “Runaway” as well as “Chance,” “Soon” and “Silence.” The paper outlines the importance of the short story genre within the Canadian literature and the impact of feminism on Munro’s writing. The main emphasis is put on the analysis of women characters that struggle for independence, education and/or love.
