    Education towards Vocational (non)qualification

  • Original language description

The paper is a view at higher education in the field of Information and Library Studies realized at the Department of Information Science, Institute of Computer Science, Faculty of Philosophy and Science at the Silesian University in Opava. It is divided into three phases. In the first phase, there are determined and compared required and anticipated professional qualifications of librarians and information specialists (according to the National System of Occupations and National Register of Qualifications) with those, which can be reasonably obtained in formal higher education at the Faculty of Philosophy and Science at the Silesian University in Opava. Given the current interdisciplinary focus of study programs, the goal is to find out whether basic knowledge of issues of Library and Information Science is sufficient and acceptable in practice for the position of librarian and information worker. The following part is devoted to compare the variability in the employment of graduates in mentioned fields in libraries and other information institutions in the Czech Republic and other related professions. For this purpose, the questionnaire survey will be conducted among graduates. Its meaning is to find out the extent to which higher education in the field of Library and Information Studies was sufficient for their employment in the branch and beyond. Finally, there are described possibilities of future directions of vocational qualification and its potential interdisciplinary focus into specific professions. The effort to integrate an individual into the modern society leads to the estimation of further development and determination of fundamental principles of the understanding of man’s place in the newly emerging environment. An essential is the appeal to provoke a discussion about the extension of the standard options for graduates of Library and Information Studies in new and specifically targeted occupations or qualifications.
