A Time of Catastrophes and Humiliations : Lower Silesian Głogów at the end of the Middle Ages
Original language description
Disasters that urban communities have had to face have not always had the character of a sudden onslaught of natural elements. Floods, fires or epidemics of infectious diseases were complemented by the crisis phenomena connected with the daily functioning of human communities. Among them were also war conflicts and social or political storms, which significantly influenced the functioning of urban communities due to their violent course. Analysis of the crisis events in Głogów (Glogau), the capital of the duchy of the same name in Lower Silesia, showed that political and social disasters could have deeper, longer-term effects on the functioning of urban communities than disasters caused by natural elements. The originally strong position of the Głogów Town Hall in the power structure of the duchy was irreversibly undermined by the extinction of the old ducal Piast dynasty. The rapid succession of dukes from different families (Jagiellonians, Hunyadi etc.) led to the destruction of the political climate that accompanied the rise to power of local nobility. The events of 1488 and 1493 took on an excessive form, part of the councilors were tormented by hunger. Internal peace was restored with the use of a comprehensible medieval tool called deditio, i.e., a ritual “friendly” solution to a disputed border (conflict) situation, but towns led by Głogów lost political influence to the nobility.
