Eat the Ones You Love: Queer Embodiment and (Un)Natural Occupation in the Irish Suburbs
Original language description
This article analyzes Sarah Maria Griffin’s Eat the Ones You Love (2025) through the frameworks of Queer Gothic and EcoGothic, focusing on the novel’s portrayal of queerness and its critique of heteronormativity and capitalist practices in the Irish suburbs. Through the analysis of the central characters—two queer women and a monstrous plant—the article illustrates how the novel reconsiders contemporary queer narratives and human-centered horror. The research indicates that the novel presents a unique view on identity and intimate relationships constructed against the backdrop of the breakdown of binary categories such as human/nonhuman, self/other, nature/civilization.
