THE CHECK-IN TECHNIQUE IN TRANSFORMATIVE PRACTICE
Original language description
The chapter systematically elaborates the “check-in” technique as a core intervention in transformative practice across mediation, dialogue, and coaching. It demonstrates that check-in is not merely a procedural question, but a deliberate method that returns decision-making to the parties, supports self-determination, and creates conditions for empowerment and recognition shifts. The text situates this technique within the theoretical framework of the transformative approach, links it to questions of freedom, choice, and autonomy, and examines its phenomenological, ethical, and agential significance. It also proposes a functional typology of check-in interventions (clarifying, process-oriented, agenda-setting, emotional, and decision-point) together with their structural dimensions, thereby contributing to both the theoretical grounding and the practical use of this technique in transformative conflict work.
