Regional Income Disparities in the New Member States: De-composition and Measurement
Original language description
Regional disparities have become a debated topic in the last two decades. This paper deals with the development of regional income disparities and the con-vergence process in the New Member States. It attempts to identify the factors re-sponsible for persistence of regional disparities in the New Member States. Using gross domestic product and gross domestic product per capita in purchasing power standard data respectively paper examines trends in regional disparities at the level NUTS 2 during the period 1996-2007. From the analysis we can see a significant convergence process and a perceptible increase in regional disparities in the case of New Member States regions, which were growing dynamically. Calculations also confirmed the link between rapid catching up process and increasing regional disparities. On contrary Eurozone regional disparities appeared to be more stable during the observed period.
