Innovative activities should generally be regarded as the key area of economic development. Innovations can bring a company competitive advantage and can help to improve competitive position in the market. The paper points out the contribution of innovation and innovative business, which have a significant impact on the competitiveness of companies, or region. From the survey which was carried out in the Department of Management and Business Administration of School of Business Administration in Karvinain the Czech Republic in the year 2011 under the title "Adaptability of SMEs in the current economic conditions in the crisis years 2007 - 2010" one of the objectives of the research was to analyze and evaluate whether firms innovated in the crisis years and what types of innovations where the most frequently in the period.
