Public expenditure on social security in most developed countries is continuously on the increase. The same situation is in the Czech Republic and also for this reason our country has a significant deficit of public finances. One of the components of social insurance or social security system is sickness insurance, which is the source of benefits in case of certain social events. The role of these benefits is to reduce or even eliminate the negative impact of these events. In relation to the reform of public finances in recent years some changes have been realized in the sphere of sickness insurance, which influenced the behaviour of employees. The aim of this paper is to give an idea of sickness insurance, especially the impact of legal regulation changes in the system of this insurance on employees, who represent the largest share of socially insured persons, focusing on the Moravian-Silesian, Olomouc, Zlín and the South-Moravian regions.
