Interaction between Competitiveness and Innovation in Selected Countries of the European Union and Switzerland
Original language description
In recent decades, the terms "competitiveness" and "innovation" have been very widely used both separately and in relation to their interaction. The purpose of this article is to verify if the innovativeness of economies has an impact on competitivenessand vice versa. Five countries - four member states of the European union - two large economies (Germany and Poland) and two small economies (Czech Republic and Austria) and Switzerland which belongs to leaders in both areas - were selected for this purpose. Two indices, i.e. the World Competitiveness Scoreboard, which examines the competitiveness of ca. sixty economies, and the Summary Innovation Index, which measures the rate of innovativeness of European economies, were used as a basis. The interaction of competitiveness and innovation was determined using a correlation analysis from 2001 to 2009.
