Comparison of NUTS 3 Brownfield Sites on the Basis of Spatial and Temporal Aspects in the Czech Republic
Original language description
At present, the issue of brownfield sites on the territory of the Czech Republic and in postCommunist countries is more than evident. Following the transformation of the economy on the territory of the Czech Republic after 1989, abandoned buildings and premises, which had been previously used more intensely than before 1989, have started occurring. In a general sense, brownfield sites can be understood as abandoned buildings and premises which have ceased to fulfil their original function and may be potentially dangerous for their surroundings and inhabitants living in their vicinity. The aim of the article is to make a comparison of registered abandoned buildings and premises in the Czech Republic for the years 2018, 2020 and 2021. The data on brownfields were compiled by the authors of the paper on the basis of public information contained in the National Brownfield Database, which is administered on the territory of the Czech Republic by the CzechInvest agency. The information was then assessed in more detail at the NUTS 3 regional level within the country. The compared variables included the size, ownership, previous use, contamination and localisation of brownfield sites according to the NUTS 3 region. Within the relevant period, the authors of the paper found that the highest number of publicly recorded abandoned buildings and premises were identified in 2020. Furthermore, the authors of the paper showed that the activities of the recorded abandoned buildings and premises in all monitored years included primarily industrial activities, community facilities and agricultural activities. The information about these activities then slightly differs on the basis of a comparison of facts on the regional level of NUTS 3 in the relevant country, as each region (NUTS 3) has different specifics and characteristics that are dominant for the relevant region.
