Original language description
Kymographic imaging is an alternative method to frame-by-frame viewing of the video recordings used traditionally in laryngoscopic examination of the vocal fold oscillations. In kymography, a single line is selected from the whole image. The successivelyrecorded images from that line are combined to create the resulting kymographic image, which displays vibratory behavior or the selected part of the vocal folds. The relationship between the kymographic vibratory pattern and the vibratory pattern ofthe vocal folds known from traditional laryngoscopy is demonstrated. Factors such as the measurement position and the intended type of voice are pointed out to be important in evaluation of the vocal-fold vibratory pattern displayed in kymographicimages. Applications in which kymographic imaging has been found helpful are, for instance, evaluation of the microdynamics of the glottal oscillatory cycles or measurement of resonance properties of the laryngeal tissues.
